Service Coordination
In addition to work preparing for the implementation of "Concept 3", the region's adopted long range vision plan for transit, the TIB also works to coordinate the services of all of the existing transit providers.
The service coordination plan is part of the adopted work program of the TIB. Additionally a monthly meeting of all of the transit providers in the region takes place typically on the first Wednesday of every month at 1:30pm. This "Service Coordination Council" is a forum for discussion of all sorts of transit service issues between the operators and is meant as a place for informal staff dialogue. Members include all of the transit providers in the region:
- Atlantic Station “Free Ride” Shuttle
- Atlanta University Center – Woodruff Library Shuttle
- Buckhead Transportation Management Association “Buckhead
Uptown Connector” - Cherokee County Area Transportation System “CATS”
- Cobb Community Transit “CCT”
- Clayton County Transit “C-TRAN”
- Emory University/Clifton Corridor Transportation
Management Association “Cliff” - Georgia Tech Parking and Transportation “Stinger”
- Georgia State University Auxiliary Services “Panther
Shuttle” - Georgia Regional Transportation Authority “Xpress”
- Gwinnett County Transit
- Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority
On roughly a quarterly basis the TIB organizes a “Bus Maintenance Forum” of all of the transit providers to meet and discuss issues about anything and everything bus, including maintenance, technology, fuel, procurement, training, facilities etc. Frequently these meetings include a featured speaker or presentation topic in addition to informal inter-agency staff dialogue. The Bus Maintenance Forums have proven to be very popular with a great deal of information sharing, best practice transfer and resource sharing taking place to the mutual benefit of all participants.
The Service Coordination Activities have several previous successes including the coordination of fixed route services through agreements of MARTA, CCT, GCT, and C-TRAN. Additionally the group facilitates communication between agencies in case of service disruptions and works with partners such as local governments, community improvement districts and others. Ongoing projects include additional coordination between shuttle providers and the larger transit providers, university system coordination, Google Transit, paratransit service coordination, improved inter-agency communication protocols, and bus maintenance coordination and resource sharing.
